DESIGNERS MAY WINCE AND BE-come defensive at the word "retro," preferring the term "design heritage," but a look to the past is at the heart of many of today's sports-car designs. Who are we to complain when the results are automobiles assensational-looking as Porsche's Boxster and Audi's TT? But back in the late Sixties a pair of Italian sports cars designed to break from the past resulted in two of the most respected Grand Touring automobiles since World War II, the Lamborghini Miuraand Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona.Great changes were influencing automobile design in the Sixties, and different countries seemed to lead the way in various sectors. Porsche did the best job of cheating the wind. American tire companies seemed to make their products wider each week. Andwith a few notable exceptions, such as Jaguar's E-Type, the Italians held the high ground in styling.
