BOOK REVIEW: The Mineral Gods Must Be Laughing!

One of the great mineral-collecting areas in the world is the American Southwest. The years after World War II were particularly fruitful for local collectors, as mine after mine stopped producing for the war effort and began producing rich specimen lodes of vanadinite, wulfenite, and a host of copper species through the effort of local collectors. Among the more active Arizona collectors during that time were Dick and Roy Jones, Dick Bideaux, and Roy Lee, the author of The Mineral Gods Must Be Laughing! (Accipiter Media, 2006). Beginning in the 1960s, I got to know these men and collected at many of the sites described in this book. Because I knew some of the characters about whom this book is written, I heard many of these tales firsthand and can vouch for the events described.
