Vitreoretinal Surgery Fellowship Training and the Big Disconnect: Is It Just a Numbers Game?

In this issue of Retina, Bakri, Alniemi, and Chan report the results of a survey of 54 vitreoretinal fellows in the United States who completed a 2-year surgical vitreoretinal fellowship in July 2010. The survey instrument emphasized surgical experience and the fellows' perceptions of clinical competence, faculty support, research opportunities, and future practice plans. As with most surveys, this survey is subject to a suboptimal response rate (66% of eligible fellows responded), possible selection bias, and the vagaries of recall bias. Nonetheless, the survey provides us with a perspective on the status of vitreoretinal fellowship training in the United States.
