The way to coordinated deployment of ERTMS/ETCS throughout the European Network

The migration to ERTMS/ETCS has already started in Europe and is now being accelerated, thanks to the corridor approach emphasized in the memorandum of understanding signed by the associations representing the stakeholders. Now that the new specification baseline 2.2.2c (= consolidated) has been finalized, the manufacturers are building on it and are demonstrating their ability to provide and install ETCS equipment in very diverse environments and to deliver the performance required by the railway operating companies and the infrastructure managers. ERTMS/ETCS is a milestone on the way towards the achievement of an integrated European railway area, since its deployment constitutes a prerequisite for improving the performance of rail in Europe and, as a result of that improvement, for revitalizing passenger and freight transport by rail.
