"S-Bahn" and similar regional express systems with high passenger densities and short headways make tough demands on operational control, especially in the event of disruptions, since it is extremely difficult to assess the consequences of the original incident and the measures adopted to cope with it, given the system's many different layers (timetable, employee roster, train roster, etc.). This makes it essential to improve on today's computer-aided operational control systems for short-distance rail-guided transport by adding components for control interventions in the best interests of customers and for the effective rectification of the disruption. The authors present SALTOS, which is a control methodology that does indeed make a contribution to this end.
