摘要

Differentiated instruction is an instructional theory that allows teachers to tailor their lessons to meet the individual needs of each student. The theory takes into account the range of students' learning styles, and the teacher can structure the lesson to address different interests, abilities, and ways of comprehending information. Differentiated instruction is common in elementary and secondary classrooms, but it has not been widely used in the college setting. Given the increasingly diverse population of students on college campuses, the principles and application of differentiated instruction could greatly enhance learning outcomes in the postsecondary educational experience. The underlying goal of differentiating instruction is to meet students where they are based on their readiness, learning profiles, and interest. Carol Ann Tomlinson is a professor at the University of Virginia Curry School of Education and is recognized as the leading expert on differentiation.
