The effect of the excitation conditions on the emission properties and the type of discharge in various excilamps is studied numerically and experimentally. The case of glow discharge is modeled with the parameters corresponding to barrier discharge (pressure of the medium, microdischarge (filament) radius, etc.). The dependences of the electric field strength in the positive column, the discharge power and efficiency, and some other parameters versus the radius of microdischarge, the preionization power, etc., are obtained. The electron energy distribution functions are calculated. Arguments in favor of and against interpreting a barrier microdischarge (filament) as a small-radius positive column of glow discharge are analyzed.
