Unhealthy work environments in healthcare organizations continue to exist. The Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index— the measure selected by the National Quality Forum as the standard for measuring hospital care environments—is associated with patient outcomes.3 One study reported that 26% of the hospitals surveyed (n = 43) were in the poor environment category and 49% (n = 83) were in the mixed environment category.3 Another study found that 85% of respondents (n = 553) reported workplace incivility within their work environment.
