MODERN LIVES ARE led in this Waikato villa, despite outward appearances, since the house and garden would make an ideal setting for a period drama about the lives of a well-to-do family in colonial New Zealand. The owners, Nigel and Judith Browning, could easily play a part. It's not unusual to see them dressed top to toe in 1920s style, perhaps heading off in their 1927 vintage Packard to an art deco weekend in Napier. When Nigel gets his even more rare vintage car - a two-seater 1911 Calthorpe - restored and on the road, Judith is ready to grace the passenger seat wearing full Edwardian garb. Imagine a high-necked embroidered blouse with leg-of-mutton sleeves, a long tailored skirt, a wide-brimmed hat with a feather and a face veil, which the Edwardians introduced to counter the fumes and dust of motoring in their new-fangled open cars.
