The debate about whether pre-registration nursing education is the best foundation for tomorrow's nurses will continue at this year's RCN congress.Senior lecturer Sean Morton of the University of Lincoln caused a stir at the recent RCN education forum conference, when he called for all nursing students to be taught phlebotomy, cannulation and IV administration skills. He also recommended that students perform independent drug rounds in their second year.'Unregistered staff carry out phlebotomy and cannulation, yet these are extended skills for nurses,' says Mr Morton. "Why are we not equipping nursing students to cannulate as part of their skills set?
