Learning theories provide a method to analyze learning experiences and consider alternate or improved ways for teaching. Gould explains how to use learning theories as a reference point to compare and analyze teaching and learning by placing 2 fundamentally different learning theories at end points on a linear scale. Teaching and learning typically fall somewhere on the linear scale between the end point learning theories and provide a method to compare and analyze teaching practice. During this comparison and analysis of teaching practice, educators use learning theories as a framework to determine how to teach differently. Learning theories provide reasoning for what happens during the learning process and inform the educator about teaching practice, ultimately improving teaching and learning.
