Breeding of pear (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai) cv. Hanareum characterized by early maturity and superior fruit quality.

Hanareum, a new pear cultivar developed from the cross between Niitaka and Chuwhangbae at the National Horticultural Research Institute in Korea during 1998, was preliminary selected in 1996 for its superior fruit quality. This cultivar was evaluated as Wonkyo Na-31 in a regional adaptability test at 9 sites from 1997 to 1999, and was finally selected in 2001. Hanareum is early-maturing and produces fleshy fruits; thus, this cultivar is suitable for cultivation during late summer. The optimum harvesting date at Suwon is 20 August, which is later by 5 days than the harvesting date for Shinsui and earlier by 10 days than the harvesting date for Konsui. The oblate and bright yellow brown fruit has a mean weight of 482 g and a soluble solids content of 13.8 degrees Brix. The flesh is soft and very juicy, and has a very negligible grit. Hanareum is highly resistant to black leaf spot caused by Alternaria kikuchiana and black spot caused by a virus. This cultivar shows good cross compatibility with major pear cultivars in Korea, such as Chojuro, Gamcheonbae, Chuwhangbae and Mansoo, but shows cross incompatibility with Whangkeumbae and Shinil..
