Ashby and Tinwell (1995) have proposed a sequential approach to testing using the bone marrow micronucleus assay, which we agree appears to have many advantages. However, their claim that the use of statistics should be avoided because "genetic toxicity observed in rodents is of such significance for hazard assessment that positive responses should be evident without recourse to statistics" requires further discussion.
