New Energy Transition Mantra: Keep the Natural Gas, Cut the Emissions

Natural gas consumption is forecast to expand for years to come, but the energy industry is embracing ways to reduce the methane and carbon dioxide (CO2) emis- sions from their production. In the United States, publicly held exploration and production (EP) com- panies have taken up the mantle, spurred on by shareholder pressures and govern- ment incentives. The Biden administration offered carrots via passage in 2021 of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and Inflation Reduction Act, which include tax breaks and funding to reduce emissions, including through carbon capture utiliza- tion and sequestration (CCUS).
