A Novel Methodology for Evaluating the Oxidation Resistance of Carbon-Containing Refratories

The conventional methods of measuring the oxidation resistance of carbon containing refractories are complex and produce a large dispersion in oxidation values due to inappropriate evaluating procedures. The present paper introduces a novel methodology developed at Usiminas for the determination of the oxidation resistance of carbon-containing refractories and presents the results of tests performed at 800 deg C, 1200 deg C, and 1400 deg C on bricks for casting ladles. The new equipment is capable of maintaining the sample at a uniform temperature and atmosphere. The method adopted permits the quantification of degree of oxidation and characterization of the decarburized layer. The present methodology therefore represents an alternative for determination of the degree of oxidation of carbon-containing refractories which could be valuable in the selection and development of new products.
