The 2010 dietary guidelines: Additional considerations

In a previous column, I provided an overview of the 2010 dietary guidelines for Americans (DGA), highlighting the five major areas the guidelines addressed. Recently, however, several well-known experts have questioned the validity of the recommendations (Hite et al., 2010; Willett & Ludwig, 2011). The focus of this column is on explicating these concerns. As informed healthcare providers, nurses need to have an appreciation of these concerns so that they can provide appropriate guidance.
