Why Elementary Mathematics has to be Mastered

A previous article (Gardiner, 2009a) looked in detail at datafrom an 'individual' round of a regional MathematicsFestival for teams of four elite Year 10 students from 50schools across the West Midlands. The current articlecontains further data from the same source, focusing thistime on three 'mathematical relay' rounds. Readers areencouraged to use these relays, or others of their own design,with their own students in Years 10-13.
