Just like other apple and pear producers, Chile is launching new varieties onto the market which meet the demands of the trade and consumers. According to unofficial surveys export volumes have dropped leaving Chile in fifth place in the apple producers' list. Apples have always been Chile's second most important export fruit following table grapes. Ac-cordingto experts from the official and private sector Chile is striving to adjust the supply of apples, like all other fruits, to the challenges ofthe world market and especially of the modern consumers on the new markets. In this way Chile is undergoing a development which means for apples: new varieties.
