Peace in the apple battle after 89 years

A leaked WTO report suggests the way may soon be clear for New Zealand apples to enter the Australian market after an 89-year ban. Australia banned the import of Kiwi apples in 1921, following the discovery of fireblight disease in New Zealand in 1919.Though New Zealand scientists have found fireblight in Australian ornamental plants and shown that the bacterial disease is unlikely to be transmitted on mature, clean fruit, efforts to gain access to the potentially-lucrative Australian market in 1986, 1989, and 1995 were rejected.
