Extensive forest plantation establishment with cottonwood sets.

In comparison to the cultivation of cuttings, the use of 2-3 m sets represents an extensive form of cultivation for cottonwood. A study of alternative designs examined the survival rate of balsam poplar-sets in dependence of the mode of planting. For this purpose, a commercial auger, a self-constructed "cultivation thorn" as well as an agricultural drainage plough were compared regarding their suitability for set planting. On different locations the increases for "furrows with drainage plough" were significantly higher than that referred to the two remaining variants. Dependent on local conditions, particularly of the type of soil and of the preparatory culture, all the examined procedures can be justified. After four years of cultivation time, sets of Hybrid 275 (Populus maximowiczii x P. trichocarpa) reached an average height of 7.8 m and an average diameter of 8.1 cm. Thus it could be shown that the use of sets offers a good alternative to traditional plantations with cuttings..
