IMTA as a concept is not new. It has been practised in Asia for thousands of years and in Europe and in the west for 40 to 50 years. It has been said that if we can convert waste into products, we can create this economic and environmental win-win situation.Yet despite this talk there has been almost no take-up of IMTA in the aquaculture industry. The idea behind the IDREEM project was to understand why that was - what were the bottlenecks, what were the barriers, why was industry hot as excited by this new production systems as a lot of the academics were?
