THE recent Seafood and Health Conference in Fishmongers Hall, London, presented some groundbreaking ideas on the benefits of eating fish and shellfish. Until now, people have concentrated on the things that fish and shellfish contain - especially allthose omega-3s, vitamins and minerals. These were given good coverage, including new evidence of a need for higher levels of vitamin D than previously thought, but a new emphasis was also placed on the detrimental things that are avoided when people choose seafood rather than meat -- such as calories, saturated fat and excess omega-6s.
