Yellow nets lead to conservation success

THE use of high-visibility, above-water predator nets at a Shetland-based cod farm has proved a great success in conservation terms, a recent industry conference was told. The nets were put in place in 2002 at Johnson Seafarms' Vidlin site, followingconsultation with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH). Addressing delegates at Aquaculture Today 2007, Managing Director of Johnson Seafarms -who trade under the NO CATCH brand name -Karol Rzepkowski,said the bright yellow nets have had a 100% success rate, with no birds becoming entangled in them since they were installed.
