5 Understanding and Managing Interdependencies

We discuss the third component of our model in this section. The third component considers the importance of explicit attention to the interdependencies among departments and measures involved in the improvement project. We describe the types of interdependencies that can arise during an improvement project. Finally, we discuss patient flow, which is an improvement domain that has a strong presence in the operations management literature.
