The Fear of Forest Practices Acts: Bona Fide or Bogeyman?

It has been sharply debated and disputed whether comprehensive forest practices acts should play a role in the management of Southern private forest-lands. Advocates of such laws argue that the existing fragmented, piecemeal statutes are ineffective,that voluntary compliance with best management practices (BMP) does not guarantee best management, and perhaps most compelling, that if proactive steps are not taken to enact forest practices acts they will ultimately be enacted by those interested in seeing an end to modern commercial forestry.
