It may be described as a disease of the wealthy developed world, but obesity is becoming an increasing concern for public health. According to the WHO (World Health Organisation) more than 300 million adults are clinically obese and at least one billion are also classed as overweight. Obesity in children is showing a worrying upward trend of between five and eight percent depending upon country. The direct consequences of this trend are themselves disturbing: Diabetes, Hypertension and Cholesterol. With around 300,000 directly related adult deaths annually in the United States alone, the WHO has termed the current state of affairs as an epidemic.
