The sensitivity of bacteria to ionising radiation depends on several factors. This study compared the effects of irradiation at a dose of 1 kGy on a non-pathogenic strain of Escherichia coli (DSM 498) grown under different conditions. Inactivation kinetics calculated using first-order kinetics and the Weibull model illustrate the need to take extrinsic factors (e.g. temperature) into account. D values of 0.27 kGy, 0.47 kGy and 0.72 kGy were calculated for microorganisms grown and irradiated in nutrient broth or minced turkey meat, or irradiated in frozen meat.
