Use of food pantries by households with children rose during the late 1990s

The distinct roles of emergency food providers, including food pantries and emergency kitchens (also called soup kitchens), in providing food for households and individuals are described. Patterns of utilization of food pantries and other emergencyfood assistance are evaluated. The effect of the 1996 welfare reform legislation on participation in the Food Stamp Program is discussed.
