The food safety legislation being discussed by the House Energy and Commerce Committee Health Subcommittee may be directed at the FDA, but the meat industry is expressing concern that the bill could lead to an "undue burden" on livestock farmers and plant operators. The Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009 (H.R. 2749), which survived a significant markup Wednesday (see related article, Page 1), includes language that would give jurisdiction over raw agricultural commodities to FDA. The language does not exclude livestock, like cattle, pigs or chicken, which concerns meat industry representatives.
