US market reopens to Eu beef imports

The European Commission has welcomed the reopening of the US market to EU beef imports, after a 17-year ban. The ban was introduced in January 1998 after the BSE crisis and remained in place until January 2015. “We welcome the US Department of Agriculture's (USDA) an- nouncement that the US will progressively reopen its market to exports of beef from the EU, starting with the Republic of Ireland,” the commission said in a joint statement from EU health commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis, trade commission- er Cecilia Malmstrom and agriculture and rural development commissioner Phil Hogan.
