Reduction of phosphate may be a useful way to control algal blooms in eutrophic aquaculture ponds. Pond pH had a strong effect on the effectiveness of a product applied to remove excess phsophate. The addition of molasses gradually lowered pH. Once pH declined under 7.7, and phosphate levels were under 0.03 mg/L, test ponds settled into a predictable and safe rhythm. Aeration costs were contained, and dissolved-oxygen levels stabilized.
