During recent years there has been an increased research focus on breeding cereal grains that can produce positive human health outcomes. One such project, involving researchers within the CSIRO's Food Futures Flagship, promises major benefits for farmers and consumers. Farmers as well as consumers stand to benefit significantly from a new experimental wheat variety being developed by CSIRO. Although it could be another five years before the high-amylose wheat is available commercially, the new variety will give farmers extra cropping and marketing options and deliver important health benefits to millions of consumers. CSIRO Plant Industry researcher Matthew Morell said the research behind the new experimental variety had built on an increased understanding during recent years of the beneficial role certain types of starches could play in the gastro-intestinal health of humans.
