Occasionally the genetic mutation that enables weeds to resist herbicides comes at a cost to the plant, making it grow less vigorously. Australian Herbicide Resistance Initiative (AHRI) researchers recently discovered one such gene in ryegrass. The gene - the 2078 mutation - causes high level clethodim resistance but also makes ryegrass less fit, so on one hand, while the gene makes it harder to kill ryegrass with clethodim, it makes it easier to outcompete it.
