The computational tool that Cinar uses is termed mineral interactive computational fluid dynamics (MI-CFD). Prior to the advent of this technology, engineers had only two ways to improve plant performance: full-scale experimentation and scale-model experimentation. The former typically involves trial and error and is hugely expensive. The latter is severely hampered by the fact that the principal physical processes involved, the fluid mechanics, combustion and thermal radiation, obey different scaling laws. This means that results determined at reduced scale may not be reliably transferred to the full scale.
