Holcim embroiled over oil-spill row in Lebanon

LEBANON Holcim is at the centre of a damaging row over an oil spill into the sea off Lebanon. Around 50 tonnes of fuel oil were spilled into the sea on January 6, at Heri, near the company's Chekka plant. Lebanon's Environment Ministry has completed a report on the oil spill and is ready to submit the case to the Lebanese environmental prosecutor. Many locals have charged that the cleanup was not done in a professional and efficient manner, leading to more pollution. A ministry spokesman, Joseph Khalil, said that experts were monitoring the accident site in an attempt to determine to damage and make sure that Holcim is removing the fuel without leaving any residue. He asserted that Holcim was cooperating with the ministry to eliminate the negative effects and that the cleanup would initially take place in the most polluted areas, because of the 'scarcity' of the required equipment in Lebanon.
