Tomato bacterial canker: some new insights

Updating the latest research findings and proven solutions. Tomato bacterial canker, caused by a bacterium called Clavibacter michiganensis subsp, michiganensis, is a common and destructive disease of both field and greenhouse tomatoes. In southwestern Ontario, in particular, where there is a large acreage of processing tomatoes grown in the field, bacterial canker is a constant threat for greenhouse tomatoes. The object of this article is to present some new research results regarding the movementof the bacteria within the tomato plant and the effect of pH on its survival in hydroponically grown tomatoes. Please read a previous article on bacterial canker in the April 2002 issue of Greenhouse Canada (Page 7) for more information regarding the Symptoms, sources of inoculum, and control.
