What's the purpose of international trade?

Exports of broiler meat from the U.S. have increased dramatically during the 1990s. Nevertheless, U.S. poultry exports are restricted by most countries around the world resulting in fewer exports than would be the case without trade barriers. In addition, trade barriers contribute to the distorted nature of chicken prices. A viscous cycle has emerged with low priced leg quarters unwelcome in some areas because they are so low in price. The U.S. should find ways to start a virtuous cycle of increased market access that would raise prices and increase access for leg quarters.
