Effects of Se were investigated on the free radical scavenging activities of polysaccharides extracted from Ganoderma lucidum. Chemiluminescent analysis indicated that polysaccharide extracts from Se-enriched G. lucidum (Se-GLPs) protected DNA from hydroxyl radical oxidative damage in a dose dependent manner. Moreover, Se-GLPs exhibited higher radical scavenging activities against superoxide and hydroxyl radicals than non-enriched G. lucidum extracts, as suggested by EPR measurements, indicating that Se plays an important role in increasing the antioxidative activities of the polysaccharide extracts. This was confirmed by spin-trapping experiments showing that at the same polysaccharide concn., abilities of all Se-GLPs samples to scavenge hydroxyl radicals increased with increases in Se contents. Additionally, all Se-GLPs samples demonstrated stronger activities against superoxide radicals than against hydroxyl radicals.
