Previously it was suggested that,in silver metaphosphate glass dc biased between gold electrodes,the metaphosphate ions conduct toward the anode with conductionof the silver ions toward the cathode.This suggestion arose from observed accumulations of oxygen and phsophorus at the anode glass interface on dc biasing.In the present work,dc biasings are made with silver anodes and sodium diborate glass,sodium metaphosphate glass and silver metaphosphate glass at respective temperatures at which the dc conductivities are the same.It is concluded that hte previously reported accumulations of oxygen adn phosphorus could be caused by shrinkage of the glass b silver depletion and not by conduction of the metaphosphate ions.Charge carrier injection or extraction on dc biasing seems to induce irreversible expansion or shrinkage of glass.
