The lifting of the long-time ban on US crude exports will lead to significantly more high-sulphur petroleum coke production in the coming years, consulting firm KBC’s Mel Larson told delegates at the Refcomm conference in Galveston, Texas, today. The removal of the ban, which had been in place for four decades, has led to a wider spread between light, sweet shale crudes that are more in demand in the global market and the heavy sour crudes that the US is best equipped to process. With the US’s more complex refineries and significant coking capacity “we can take anything and make product out of it,” Larson said.
