Desulphurisation of high-sulphur petroleum coke - by heat treatment in a rotary furnace

Petroleum coke with a high S content (e.g. obtd. from an S-contg. crude) is desulphurised to make it suitable for use in metallurgical carbon electrodes by heat-treating in a reducing atmos. in a rotary furnace or rotating-hearth furnace. The coke is pref. heated at =1550 degrees C for =4 hrs. Existing coke calcination furnaces can be used without significant modification.
