Coke contg. is not 0.85% (0.5%) S is produced by contacting coke at 660-1000 degrees C (780-1000 degrees C) esp. 830 degrees C, with a desulphurising gas consisting of COCl2 or a mixt. of CO + Cl2. If the coke originates from petroleum or from pyrites-free coal, it is pre-mixed with Fe oxides and/or Fe. Coke of varying S content, e.g. 4%, can be treated. The degree of desulphurisation may be 90%. The desulphurised coke may be used as a fuel without contaminating the atmos. and low-ash coke can be obtd. by washing and magnetic sepn.
