Emissions Testing of Combustion Stack and Pushing Operations at Coke Battery211 No.5/6 at ABC Coke in Birmingham, Alabama. Final Report, Volume 1 of 3. Report 211 Body and Appendices, A, B and C

The United States Environment Protection Agency (EPA) is investigating the coke211u001emaking industry to characterize hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) emitted from coke 211u001epushing operations and combustion (underfire) stacks. This test report addresses 211u001epushing emissions from a coke oven, and emissions from the combustion (underfire) 211u001estack that serves Coke Battery No. 5/6 at ABC Coke in Birmingham, Alabama. The 211u001epurpose of this test program was to quantify emissions from the inlet and outlet 211u001eof the baghouse controlling emissions from the coke pushing operation and to 211u001equantify emissions from the combustion outlet stack. The data may be used by the 211u001eEPA in the future to support a residual risk assessment for coke oven facilities. 211u001eThe testing was performed to quantify uncontrolled and controlled air emissions 211u001eof filterable particulate matter (PM), methylene chloride extractable matter 211u001e(MCEM) and 19 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) including acenaphthene, 211u001eacenaphthylene, anthracene, benzo(a)anthracene, benzo(a)pyrene, 211u001ebenzo(b)fluoranthene, benzo(e)pyrene, benzo(k)fluoranthene, benzo(ghi)perylene, 211u001echrysene, dibenz(a,h)anthracene, fluoranthene, fluorene, indeno(1,2,3,-cd)pyrene, 211u001e2-methynaphthalene, napthalene, perylee, phenanthrene, and pyrene. In addition, 211u001efollowing the PM and MCEM analyses, the samples were analyzed to screen for the 211u001epresence of 17 trace metals. Baghouse dust samples were also collected and 211u001eanalyzed for 16 trace metals. Simultaneous testing was performed at the inlet and 211u001eoutlet of the baghouse controlling emissions from the coke pushing operation. 211u001eSampling was also performed on the combustion outlet stack. In addition to 211u001epollution testing, oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) were measured at each 211u001elocation. During the sampling program, Research Triangle Institute (RTI), another 211u001eEPA contractor, monitored and recorded process and emission control system 211u001eoperating parameters. This volume (Volume I) is comprised of 542 pages and 211u001econsists of the report text, and Appendices: A (Process Data), B (Raw field 211u001eData), and C (Analytical Data except CARB 429).
