Car scrapping programs are having a pronounced effect on fleet renewal in some parts of the European Union, encouraging purchases of more fuel-efficient vehicles. Germany has offered a ?2,500 ($3,300) incentive for drivers to scrap cars over nine years old, leading to a 40% increase in new car registrations in March versus 12 months earlier. Even adjusted for the fact that the Easter holidays were later this year, which meant March had more working days, sales picked up by just over 20% to 401,000 vehicles.
