The present study assesses the distribution and contaminationrnlevels of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHCs) in surface seawatersrnduring three successive seasons, (summer, monsoon andrnwinter), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in intertidalrnsediments along the worlds largest Alang–Sosiya shipscrappingrnyard. The pollution levels at this coast are evaluatedrnand compared with those at one reference station (Mahuva, 60 kmrnaway from this yard towards south) in this region and similar shiprnscrapping yards in Asia. The concentrations of TPHCs in seawaterrnwere high in winter season followed by summer and monsoonrnwhich were relatively, much higher, about six times in winterrnand five times in summer/monsoon as compared to the referencernstation at Mahuva. The TPHCs concentrations in the coastalrnwaters of Alang–Sosiya region are nearly 10-100 times higher onrncompared with other regions. The levels of PAHs found in thernAlang–Sosiya sediments are between four and nine times higherrnthan these prescribed levels by OSPAR commission. The overallrnlevels of PAHs show the low content in Alang–Sosiya compared tornvalues reported from Chang Jiang in China while the concentrationsrnwere nearly three times higher than Aliaga in Turkey. Thernrelationships between the content of PAHs and %TOM (totalrnorganic matter) in sediments are discussed.
