Solid-state structures of complexes formed between sodium cation, water, and/or 4,13-diaza-18-crown-6 (1) are reported. The oxygen donor atoms of either water or the crown participate in forming a channel-like network of sodium cations that may emulate the interior of a channel's pore. Specifically, the structures of 1 . Na2I2(H2O)(2) and NaI(H2O)(2) are reported along with the structure of N,N'-bis(propargyl)-4, 13-diaza-18-crown-6.KBF4, included for comparison. In all cases, cations and donor groups within the structures form extended columnar networks that may mimic natural cation channels within bilayers. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A.
