摘要

Administration of ferulic acid (FA) as an oral therapeutic is hampered by its absorption in the small intestine and rapid excretion. Colonic microbial enzymes have been shown to produce FA. This study screened selected Lactobacillus strains for FA production via the action of FA esterase, by monitoring release of free FA from a natural substrate, ethyl ferulate (EFA), in an MRS-EFA plate clearing assay. L. fermentum ATCC 11976, L. reuteri ATCC 23272 and L. fermentum NCIMB 5221 all showed clearance zones 10 mm in diam., confirming the presence of FA esterase activity. The most efficient FA producing strain was L. fermentum NCIMB 5221, producing 0.168 +or- 0.001 mg/ml FA after 48 h of incubation in 0.296 mg/ml EFA.
