However, communicating about sensitive issues can be intensely difficult and there is a need for education and training in end-of-life care among nurses of all specialisms as well as a need for advanced communication skills. Understanding what to expect when someone is dying, how to have difficult conversations and communicate sensitively with the appropriate terminology, how to offer individualised support to patients, their families, friends and carers, and the importance of taking into account the cultural perceptions of the people you are communicating with are all important areas for nurses to build their knowledge, skills and confidence in (Mendes, 2015).
