Flavonoids present in 3 different varieties of strawberries (Camarosa, Selva and Dorit) grown in Elazig, Turkey, were investigated, and their effects on the radicals DPPH. and OH. and lipid peroxidation determined. A 50-100 mul extract demonstrated considerable radical scavenging activity. In vitro experiments with H2O2 and Fenton reagent showed a high capacity of the extract to inhibit lipid peroxidation. When the level of malondialdehyde-2-TBA was compared with that of the Fenton R group, levels were shown to be decreased in groups in which a significant level of strawberry extract had been added (p < 0.001).
