Dear Editor: The development of colorectal neoplasia is determined by a series of risk factors, such as genetic polymorphisms, environmental factors, lifestyle habits, and the complex interaction between these factors. Both environmental and genetic factors contribute to the pathogenesis as well as prevention of human colorectal neoplasia. An important biotransformation enzyme that may play a role in the detoxification of dietary and other carcinogens is NQO1, and its polymorphism in codon 187 (C609T, Pro187Ser, rsl800566), resulting in an inactive enzyme, has been associated with the risk of various cancers, such as renal, lung, bladder, and breast cancer. Several epidemiological studies indicated the association between NQO1 Pro187Ser polymorphism and the risks of colorectal cancer (CRC) and colorectal adenoma (CRA), but the results remain conflicting rather than conclusive. In order to derive a more precise estimation of relationship, we conducted this meta-analysis to summarize the evidence to date regarding the association between NQO1 Pro187Ser polymorphism and colorectal neoplasia.
